Apple Picked as World’s Best Brand

Monday, May 16, 2011

Apple has replaced Google as the most valuable brand in the world.

That’s the finding of the sixth annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands survey from brand marketing firm Millward Brown, which calculates that Apple’s brand value has risen by 84 percent in the last year and is now worth $153.3 billion. Compared to the company’s 2006 figures, Apple has increased its brand value by 859 percent.

Following Apple among the top five brands are Google, IBM, McDonald’s and Microsoft and rounding out the top 10 were Coca-Cola, AT&T, Marlboro, China Mobile and GE, Millward Brown said.

[How to Grow Like the 'Golden' Apple]

The company determines the brand’s value based on research, including interviews with thousands of consumers, that determines how much of a company’s value is based on brand alone and how much on other factors.

“We look at cash flows of the business and then we ask how much of that money comes from the associations that consumers have with the brand and how much from other factors,” said Mario Simon, managing director of Millward Brown Optimor, who called the process a “collective consumer brain scan.”

“Every time [a consumer] chooses an iPod over another MP3 player we look at how much of the time is it because of the brand and how much is it because it looks cool or because it syncs with iTunes,” Simon told BusinessNewsDaily.

Apple’s astronomic ascension in brand value can be attributed to its unending focus on keeping its customers happy, according to Simon.

“Since the beginning of their brand, Apple has known who they are serving and has had a clear vision of who their customer is,” Simon said. “They are thinking about how to make the life of that customer better.

They are so good at focusing on that purpose of allowing people to self-express through technology. It’s allowed them to make tough decisions over time and carve out specific space for themselves over time.”

Simon said businesses of all sizes can learn from Apple, which, he pointed out, used to be a small business.

“All businesses can ask themselves how to add meaning to lives of their customers,” he said. “Apple has done extremely well at conveying it because they believe it. Any business can do that.”

Another brand that has figured out how to add meaning to its customers’ lives is Facebook, which, though it came in at only No. 35 in terms of brand value, had the highest percentage brand growth this year and appears for the first time in the Top 100. Amazon is the top retail brand. And despite bad publicity and recalls, Toyota is back at No. 1 in the car category; a testament to strong brands and customer loyalty, the BrandZ survey found.

Google, which was No. 1 last year, was ranked in second place on the overall Top 100 list with a brand value of $111.5 billion and IBM was third with a value of $100.9 billion.

Deal of the Day: Core i5 Lenovo ThinkPad X220 for $854

Sunday, May 15, 2011

If you’re a frequent reader of this site, you know that we’re consistently impressed with Lenovo’s ThinkPad line of laptops. From their best-in-class keyboards to frequently long battery lives, most of the ThinkPads we review earn high marks. In particular, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 earned four stars and our Editors’ Choice, and we’re happy that it’s also available today for just $854 through LogicBUY.

In our review of the 12.5-inch ThinkPad X220, we praised its extraordinarily long 7-hour and 51-minute battery life, light weight, and responsive keyboard. While the exact model that we tested has a few more upgrades than the $854 configuration, you can get the exact model we tested for $1,101 with today’s discount– almost $300 less than the price when we reviewed it in March. The big differences between the two models is a slightly faster processor, double the RAM, and a larger, faster hard drive. No matter which configuration you choose, you’ll be investing in a durable and capable machine.

Base Specs: Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3-GHz processor, integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB 5400 rpm hard drive, 12.5-inch LED backlit display (1366 x 768), 802.11b/g/n wireless, and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Nvidia to Acquire Icera Baseband Biz, Goes Right After Qualcomm

Saturday, May 14, 2011
0 comments

Nvidia, makers of the hugely successful Tegra mobile processors, just announced plans to acquire Icera for $367 million. This is a bold move into Qualcomm’s territory since Icera manufactures wireless modems approved by over 50 cellular carriers worldwide. Icera also has more than 550 patents granted or pending.

According to Phil Carmack of Nvidia, “Icera’s programmable baseband processor architecture will allow NVIDIA and its OEM customers to innovate and adapt signaling algorithms in the rapidly evolving mobile telecommunications market.” Nvidia promises faster time to market for its partners.

This is a big step for Nvidia and is no doubt a direct challenge to Qualcomm’s dominance in the smartphone modem space. The move also represents a little bit of catch-up on Nvidia’s part, since Intel acquired Infineon’s wireless business back in January. No wonder there’s so much activity in this space. Nvidia says the industry is worth $15 billion a year.

Stay tuned for more details.

How to Wipe Personal Data from Your Smartphone

So you bought a new phone and you want to sell your old phone, but you’re worried about the buyer finding personal information on your phone. You can never be too careful, so it’s important to know how to remove all that personal data before a stranger has the phone.

Before doing this, remember to backup all your data and transfer important files to your new phone. This includes pictures, documents, apps and app logins and media (music, videos and e-books). Some platforms and carrier networks provide some kind of backup service.

Next, make sure to delete everything from any storage media. Usually, this just means formatting the microSD card if your phone has one. Most phones have an option somewhere in the settings menu to format the memory card. This wipes the data completely. Another option is to simply keep the microSD card and use it in your new phone, as long as the new phone accepts storage media (the iPhone doesn’t) and you make it clear to potential buyers that a microSD card isn’t included in the phone you’re selling.

The final and most important step is to perform a factory data reset, also known as a factory wipe or hard reset. In essence, the factory reset removes any personal data and apps and returns the phone to the default state the phone was in when you purchased it.

Android phones: A factory data reset can be done by going to Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. Conversely, you can also dial *2767*3855# which will cause the phone to power off and then power back on in a factory reset. There is some inconsistency with how certain Android phones react to the dial reset, so it may not completely wipe some phones. Also keep in mind that rooted Android smartphones may react unpredictably to a factory data reset.

iPhones: The reset command is in the Settings menu under the General category. It’s also possible to perform a factory data reset by connecting the phone to a computer and using iTunes. In the source list, click on the iPhone, then click on the Summary tab and choose Restore. You will have the option to restore to a backup copy of your data or “Set up as a new phone.” Choose to set it up as a new phone and all personal data will be wiped.

BlackBerry phones: Go to Options > Security Options > General Settings > Menu > Wipe Handheld.

Windows Phone 7: Go to Settings > About > Reset Phone. There are also methods to perform a hard reset using just physical buttons (volume and camera buttons, for instance), but they vary based on manufacturer and model, so you’ll need to look up the method for your specific device.

Google Earth for Honeycomb: Xoom Around the Globe

Friday, May 13, 2011
0 comments

Yesterday, Google released a new version of its popular Google Earth application designed specifically for Honeycomb tablets. With the help of a trusty Motorola Xoom, we fired up the program to see how it fared in comparison to its smartphone and desktop cousins.

New Action Bar

When we launched the application, it presented us with the usual interactive globe, which can be spun with the flick of a finger or gradually zoomed into via pinch-to-zooming or double tapping the screen. Regardless of what type of device you’re using, one thing is for sure. This opening sequence never gets old. The user will immediately notice an action bar at the top which provides quick access to search, a compass, a my location button, a drop down menu to access various layers, and settings.

Pop-Up Window

One of the best features of Google Earth for Honeycomb is the new pop-up box for places and businesses. When using Google Earth on non-Honeycomb mobile devices, the act of selecting information boxes, flags, or panoramic pictures takes you to another page, briefly taking you out of the immersive visual environment until you hit the back button. With Google Earth for Honeycomb, however, users are treated to a pop-up window that houses all kinds of contextual information such as photos galleries and descriptions of a building. What’s really neat is that the pop-up window can be scrolled both vertically and horizontally (when switching info tabs) to reveal additional information including pictures, videos, and Wikipedia write-ups.

The same pop-up box appears when choosing layers as well.

Performance & 3D Rendering

Honeycomb has been built from the ground up to take advantage of hardware acceleration and the extra muscle of dual-core CPUs (particularly the Nvidia Tegra 2). After some hands-on time with this app running over both Wi-Fi and Verizon’s 3G network, we can easily see this extra power being put to good use. Normal Google Earth movements such as zooms, pans, and tilts were relatively smooth and the famous “fly to” feature worked as you would expect it to and was a joy to watch.

To really see give this app a workout, we took a quick trip over to the Bin Laden Compound and turned on the 3D buildings layer to survey the land. In an instant, a fairly accurate model of the compound complete with 18-foot walls and a satellite dish popped up from the ground. As on the desktop version of Google Earth, we were able to easily rotate around the 3D model with ease and could see a reasonable amount of detail. When we tried to view a city such as Manhattan with the same 3D building layer, however, the limits of Tegra 2 quickly became evident. The Motorola Xoom wasn’t as snappy and the full amount of detail was never displayed, whereas on the desktop everything was much more photo-realistic.

It’s important to note that the Internet connection hooked up to our desktop is DSL, whereas our Motorola Xoom is running with much less reliable 3G and Wi-Fi network connections. It will be interesting to see how the 4G version of the Xoom and the HSPA+ enabled T-Mobile G Slate will perform.

Final Thoughts

With the addition of the action bar and the ability to render 3D buildings, the Honeycomb version of Google Earth easily bests its smart phone sibling and, because it’s  mobile by design, makes it more useful than its desktop counterpart. Will it give you that same desktop quality? No, but who cares when you can speak to your tablet and utter “Buckingham Palace” and watch as you are magically whisked away?

PaperPhone Prototype Makes Calls, Reacts to Bending Gestures

Thursday, May 12, 2011
0 comments

We’ve been intrigued with the concept of flexible displays for a while, as their lighter weight and bendable structure make them ideal pocket companions. Researchers at the Human Media Lab at Canada’s Queen’s University must agree; they’ve created a fully functioning E Ink smartphone which conforms to the shape of a user’s purse or pocket.

Called the “PaperPhone,” this device can make and accept calls, store eBooks, and play music. There’s even a built-in Wacom tablet for drawing. Underneath the 3.7-inch display, a flexible printed circuit with “resistive bend” sensors allows users to interact with the device using various bending gestures, such as flipping the corner to turn a page in an eBook.

Speaking to Gizmag, Roel Vertegaal, the head of the Human Media Lab, said that the PaperPhone is meant to operate like a sheet of interactive paper. Perhaps the last holdouts against the eReader phenomenon will be converted by the phone’s more tactile interface. Another bonus: When the device isn’t being operated, it consumes zero electricity. Needless to say, we can’t to have a PaperPhone in our pocket—however far away that day may be.
