Use NFC Tags And a Nexus S to Automate Your Life

Sunday, April 17, 2011

NFC is a technology with a lot of potential, and if you’ve got a Nexus S (the only Android phone to currently support NFC, though many more are on the way) you can get a taste of that potential right now.

Applications like the NFC Task Launcher for Android let you set up a series of profiles, each of which delineate a series of tasks for your phone to complete — such as changing the ringer mode, adjusting the volume, or launching any application — and then associate them to a given NFC tag, so that when your phone comes close to the tag, it performs the associated activity.

An NFC tag is basically a special sticker that you can buy at places like Taggage. The idea is that you stick the tag anywhere — in your office, in your car — anywhere your phone will be. Then, when you put your phone there — when you get into your car, for example — your phone performs the associated tasks automatically. It’s all very cool, and makes NFC seem like something that could be incredibly useful in the near future.

Check out the video below for a closer look.
