Google Makes Android More Enterprise-Friendly

Monday, April 25, 2011

Android is a great mobile OS, but its enterprise features could stand to be more substantive. Google clearly agrees, because they’ve just made three major updates to make the operating system a more viable option for businesses.

First, they’ve updated their Google Apps Device Policy to enable employees to secure a lost Android 2.2+ device by finding it on a map, ringing it, resetting the device’s password via a new My Devices site. Second, Apps administrators now have the ability to “Encrypt Data on Device,” which will include a requirement of encrypted storage on Android 3.0 tablets. Third, Google Apps Lookup is basically a shared blackbook for the company, letting users easily find and talk to everyone they work with.

These look to be some positive changes to the Android system, and certainly serve to bring it closer to parity with other offerings, like the iPhone.
