Replica Commodore 64 Has Netbook Guts

Friday, April 15, 2011

Long-time computer enthusiasts harbor a special love for the Commodore-64; it was initially released in 1982, competing with the then-new Apple II. It was a system-in-a-keyboard, more or less, with a distinctive look that still sets nerdy hearts aflutter. If you’ve got one of those fluttered hearts, then you’re going to love this news: Commodore USA has started selling modern replicas of the venerable classic.

The new Commodore 64 has the same chassis and outward design as the original, but the insides have been improved just slightly. Instead of the original 1.023-MHz microprocessor, the new C64 boasts a dual-core Intel 525 Atom CPU and an Nvidia Ion 2 graphics chipset.  It also has 5 USB ports and an optional Blu-ray player. And while this little beauty, with its wonderfully old-school keyboard, is a modern machine, it also comes with a C64 emulator, for anyone who happens to have any of the old 8-bit games. You can buy this retro-styled piece of goodness now at the Commodore USA Website.
